2007 – All Souls’ “Cross Touch ’07″

Cross Touch 2007

All Souls’ mixed, social Touch Rugby tournament at Dulwich College.

On the only day of summer all year, the fantastic weather and friendly crowd made for a great atmosphere at this year’s All Souls Touch Rugby tournament at Dulwich College!

There was a real mix of players (wearing beautifully bright team T-shirts, designed by our very own Dave “Benno” Bennett!) but all of the spectators agreed that the standard of the competition amongst the teams was impressive - both in the “elite” and the “social” leagues.

The elite league cup final, in particular, provided for some memorable Touch, not least for the commitment shown by both sides … all the more impressive given that it was the eighth encounter of the day for each side on a hot and humid afternoon!

The final result was fittingly close, “Kiwi Mana” (or “Kiwi-Mania” as some wags would insist!) was narrowly beaten by the classy “Something Witty”, a formidable team at any tournament … and prompting the aforementioned wags to question the presence of the odd international in the squad!  But, to be fair, it would take no less to beat the masterfull skippering of that living legend Tony Barker!

The ever-excellent barbecue food was ably provided and cooked by The Great Renee Bredenkamp and her team of dedicated helpers – and well-received after a day of hard play!

We would like to thank all those who gave generously of their time on the day as well as in the lead-up to the tournament, and not least Andy Harris, our tournament speaker this year, to whom we bid a very fond farewell as he and Jo emigrate to Central Asia to serve in Community Development.  Andy’s talk on ‘a goal worth having’ is truly lived out in his and Jo’s lives and we will miss them both.

The day would not have been the undoubted success that it was without the hard work of Andy Webb-Peploe and his army of helpers, from Scorekeepers to Referees and everyone in between! … The sight of Morenike Williams charging down the pitch following the play, whilst somehow managing to shout and blow a whistle simultaneously was fabulous to behold!
